President's Travel Ban: A Necessary part of National Security?
1.) Read the Washington Post Article attached in the hyperlink. You may pick another source's article reporting on this topic if you choose. 2.) Construct a response post. You need not answer all questions. There are multiple questions to get you thinking and discussing.
Some guiding questions to consider for the original post:
1. President Trump is quoted as saying, “As president, I must act to protect the security and interests of the United States and its people.” Respond to this statement 2. Using your knowledge of public policy stances from the Republican party platform analysis, discuss the following statement: On Twitter, President Trump tweeted, “Making America Safe is my number one priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet.” 3. Is there a compelling government interest to create such a travel ban? Why or why not?
The following explains how you will be assessed: 1. Make at least one (1) original post that addresses one more of the guiding questions. • Compose a response (around 200-300 words) • Use specific evidence from the reading in your response 2. Pose at least one question for discussion that would invite a peer to respond at the end of your original post 3. Respond to at least two (2) of your peers directly
Scroll down to the bottom and click "Reply to Topic" Enter your name where it says guest name (USE LAST NAME) Type your "original post" and click create post Next, Instead of hitting the "Quote" button, simply use @thestudents name to signify your reply, this way we will not take up so much space (Thank you Emily Sarver for this idea)
All ground rules from in class discussion apply to the discussion board. You need not all agree with one another; however, academically present your stance.

People believe that the travel bans are to eliminated Muslim foreigners in our country, this may have some truth to it considering Trumps view on Muslims but its main purpose is not to discriminate but to protect the American people from certain threats. Most of the travel bans are in the middle east so that makes scenes because that is where ISIS and al-Qa'ida are and they remain a huge threat to the American people. The one ban that didn't make sense to a lot of people and to the nation itself was Chad. From an article from NPR(National Public Radio) they said, "Chad is totally puzzled and baffled by President Trump's decision to slap this ban on Chadian nationals," NPR's Ofeibea Quist-Arcton tells Morning Edition. "Chad is not happy, because it feels that it has done its utmost in the fight against terrorism." NPR says that this may have been something to do with oil, "Chad had accused Exxon Mobil, which exports crude from Chad, of not meeting its tax obligations to the African state. The Chadian government sought a whopping $74 billion fine in addition to $819 million in overdue royalties.". It's clear that the relation between the U.S and Chad will be tarnished after all of this is over. We still have not gotten a clear answer as to why Chad is on the travel ban.

It is understandable that Trump wants to keep this country safe, but does this ban actually protect us? This ban mainly focuses on Muslim countries, even though Trump says it wasn’t his intention on targeting them. Not all Muslims are terrorists, but our country seems to see them as a threat. Now there is a ban on Venezuela, Chad, and North Korea. This ban doesn’t seem like it will help us, but it will turn the innocent people away that want to come to this country and possibly support it. Immigrants should be welcomed here; it’s what makes our country diverse. There is still hope for these countries that are banned to get off the ban list. Sudan, a country that was on the ban list issued at the beginning of the year, was taken off because of their cooperation with the United States government on national
Will this ban protect us or be effective?

The new travel ban Trump announced on Sunday will add three more countries to the previous list and even take one away. Due to a recent review of Sudan's cooperation with the U.S government, it was able to be taken off the ban list. Now the banned countries include Yemen, Iran, Syria, Libya, Somalia, North Korea, Venezuela, and Chad. Even experts are still trying to decipher why exactly Chad is on this list, and citizens of Chad themselves are confused and worried. The original ban was solely on "muslim" countries, even though Trump claims this is not the case. Administration denies these bans were placed against anything but the governments of other countries, since they are not compliant with ours, but adding more countries is not going to fix the bigger issues. Arguments for whether or not the ban is legal have been set by the Supreme Court for October 10th. Trump believes the overall goal of this ban is to keep our country safe, and all countries have various reasons to be on the list, and until further notice it will stay this way.
Are the travel bans necessary? Do they serve a great enough purpose to make an impact on the safety of America ?

The Trump administration created a ban on travel from countries that were seen as a threat to the safety of the U.S. citizens. Many see the travel ban as a discriminatory act against Muslims and or a completely unnecessary action made by irrational people, but Restrictions on the travel of people from other countries is a necessity to keep the American people safe. Countries in Europe and near Europe that have taken in a massive amount of refuges from the middle east have been paying for it with increased crime and terrorist attacks. America should not allow a mass of immigrants and instead should protect itself from threats and restrict who can come into the country. The ban is based on good intentions but the trump admiration made choices and presented their final decision in a manner that does not sit well with the public and produces outrage and resistance. The travel ban should be revised as to not block non-threats and to allow travel but still restrict it in a reasonable way to ensure the safety of the American people.
Would you implement travel restrictions on other countries? How effective are the restrictions put up by the trump administration?

President Trump is quoted as saying, “As president, I must act to protect the security and interests of the United States and its people.” Most people would understand why Trump is wanting to try to increase the ways to keep the American people safe, but has he taken it too far? Most people who have seen Trumps views and beliefs would understand what he feels towards the people he is trying to ban, but when he says he is not trying to target them it is hard to believe that they would feel the same way. When most people hear the word Muslim, they immediately come to the word terrorist, which is wrong because they are not all that way. We need to stop labeling people because it is not going to help the situation, it might just make it worse. Many can see why he wants to put more rules and regulations on travel so that he can keep people safe, but does he really have to include all the different countries that he did? Yes most of them make sense, but some of them do not. For instance, Chad was one that did not make the most sense, but it said in the Washington Post that, “the decision seems to hinge on problems with information sharing, according to the U.S. statement.” So Trump is having different reasons why to ban these different countries, some of them for more reasons than others. Do you think that they should continue vetting, even after they get a visa into the country? Do you think that this ban would help in the long run?

This ban should be effective in the long run, if they take the right precautions and standards throughout the process of the ban. It would also help protect the American people because there would be less people to worry about from countries that get a "bad rep," they would not have to fear as much as they used to and it would allow the people to feel more save and protected. The ban would protect us to a certain extent

This will improve the safety of our country by eliminating some of the distractions and problems that we are having to face in this day and age. Also it would allow people to have the ability to have there focus on other things that this country needs to work on to keep it stable and their people safe from other things.

I agree, the travel ban made by Trump is necessary for the safety of our citizens. The countries on the list are possible concerns for terrorism. These bans are very effective in the fact that no one is allowed in the country from that list as of now until, we find a better way to gather background information on each immigrant to ensure the safety of the people.
