@oliviagirdwood Although I’m truly puzzled as to why any citizen in the Philippines is letting him get away with this, I feel as if it’s because many are holding onto his original promises during the times of the election. People were okay with him saying he will do whatever it takes to get rid of the “drug problem” and now that he is taking an immoral route to deal with it, they accept it only because it’s still a “solution.” Others may also be too scared to speak up about it out of the worry that they could be killed themselves.

@meghan Regarding your question, No one can really be sure that this guy will ever leave the presidency because of what he’s made and done for himself to protect his status, but it’s easy to say that not every Filipino wants this man in office. The Philippines aren’t North Korea, people know that they don’t have to live with people being killed left and right and a man at their forefront who makes crude comments every 2 seconds and then pretends it was a joke. He was elected in so the next election he might be voted out, but that’s only in the unlikely event that he doesn’t put up a fight to stop the election. I wouldn’t even be surprised if this man went to the extent to have his opponents in any election killed and there wouldn’t be any consequences because he is the one who calls the shots. Generally, I don’t think that he will go down without a fight, but maybe at some point he will step down and let someone else take control, but judging by what he does now, that seems unlikely unless he dies. (I wasn't quite sure how to say I was replying to this without quoting it). There are opposing forces for Deterte's presidency, "Representative Emmi de Jesus of the Gabriela Women’s Party", for example is against many of Duterte's campaigns "said that Mr. Duterte had, in effect, given the green light for soldiers to violate women’s rights"("Draws Fire"). I totally agree with you that he would probably stop the election, especially if it is a woman going against him for presidency. As Wyatt insinuated, it seems as though Duterte is in charge of the DDS, so he could use it to stage an event to delay or even stop the future elections. If he does step down, I fear that it will be a similar situation to Venezuela, where a bad leader hand-picks a worse leader.

brooke i agree that what both presidents say is inappropriate and maybe they should be under question for what they said. It is wrong and disrespectful but so far throughout both presidents terms they have gotten alot done and have accomplished what they wanted to and said they would do in their campaign. Yes, duterte is taking a harsh action but it gets the job done.

@makayla I agree with what you said that "they continue to speak without a filter and will continue to do this until someone calls them out on it and it gets enough attention for them to realize that people are going to get mad and pretty soon the error in their ways will be their downfall of power in the public eye." They will never stop what they are doing util there are major consequences. Duterte w;ll continue these killings unless he suffers consequences for his actions, but until then if no one has the drive to stop him, the killings will continue. The same applies to his rude and disturbing comments, those will continue as well until someone stands up to him and makes him aware that "joking" or not those words should not be spoken by a president.

jonahI understand that they are "getting the job done" but a much more qualified, and respectable candidate could also get the job done as well, if not better while respecting their people. I do understand where you are coming from, but Duterte is not fit to be president with his violent approach in order to stop drugs within his country and the disturbing way he talks about his people. I for one feel that even if the job is getting "done" a president should be someone a country looks up to and not someone who they are ashamed of, or makes them look bad. The president of the Philippines should be ashamed of himself being that he is taking illegal actions in order to stop the drug trafficking and he should also be ashamed of the way he speaks. Like I said I completely can see your side, but while looking at the big picture under no circumstances should presidents act like children.

jonah So does that mean you support a mass murder if it gets the job done?I have to agree with brooke that presidents should never act like this under any circumstances. And I wouldn't use the word "harsh" to describe the actions Duterte is taking, these actions are way more than harsh, they are taking the lives of many people.

@olivia; to answer your question about why hasn’t anyone stopped him yet, I really think that most people have no idea that these mass killings are happening in the first place, mean look at our class, I am almost 100% positive that no one knew about it prior to this, so just imagine our country as well as other countries. At least the ICC is looking into him, and trying to pin him for some sort of crime, he’s murdering drug dealers, drug users, even children on the streets because they were involved in gangs! This guy is insane. I get that he’s trying to clear the country of drugs but there are several different approaches like you said.

@matt I agree with you that Mr. President is taking the right approach while doing it the wrong way. That being said, he still carries a 91% approval rating compared to Trump's 39%. I believe that Duterte thinks what he is doing is okay because so many people approve of him and because he holds a lot of power which leads to many thinking they are higher than the law. So if the ICC stepped in it would be beneficial to prove a point that this kind of leadership will not be tolerated in the modern world.

@meghan I believe his presidency will come crashing down when another country decides to step in because of his extremism towards combating drugs. I do not believe that the people want it to end yet, they highly approve of him even with his unorthodox approach in the modern world.

@cole i dont agree with the statement that these people are dying for what they are doing. I think there should be another way that these situations are handled. Maybe they should have harsher punishments but i dont think that they should die.

@matt Mr. President is killing the people that need to be killed. How else do you expect to eliminate the drug problem. If you were trying to bust a drug dealer, you need to do more than just go in there and be like "yo. You're going to jail." It just doesn't work like that. The dealer most likely has hundreds of weapons on hand just waiting for someone to come bust him. You have to eliminate the problem. End of story.

@meghan i have the same approach to this that hunter does. i too agree that his presidency will come crashing down but i dont think that the people of the Philippines will not let that happen. I think whenever another country steps in to fight against Mr. President, the people will step in to stop that from happening.

@everyone A drug lord just does not give up. If the man needs to sell his drugs, he will do everything humanly possible to sell his drugs. Drug lords have been known to deal OUT OF PRISON. Wanna know how to eliminate that? Kill them on the spot. President Duterte is going the right way with his elimination of drugs in the Philippians. You can not plan to eliminate drugs by locking them up. These people do it for a living and they will not stop until they are dead.
